The Relief of a Quick Fix: Treating Ingrown Toenails

When a patient limps into my office, wincing with every step, I can usually guess what is going on before they even sit down in the chair. More often than not, it is an ingrown toenail.

Patients are often surprised by how quickly something so small can cause such an overwhelming amount of pain. A tiny spicule of nail pressing into the sensitive skin of the toe border can turn putting on a shoe or walking across the room into an agonizing chore.

Here at Elk Grove Foot and Ankle Clinic, treating ingrown toenails is one of the most common and immediately rewarding procedures I perform. Patients walk in frustrated and in pain, and they walk out feeling instant relief.

Why Do Ingrown Toenails Happen?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft flesh. The result is pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes an infection. I frequently see this caused by improper nail trimming, tight-fitting shoes that crowd the toes, or even genetic predisposition.

When someone comes to our Elk Grove clinic with an ingrown nail, my first priority is to evaluate the severity and check for signs of infection.

How We Treat It

Depending on whether this is an acute flare-up or a chronic, recurring issue, our approach adapts to what the patient actually needs.

Usually, for mild cases caught early, we can often alleviate the pressure safely in-office without any minor surgery. However, if the nail has dug deep or an infection has taken root, I perform a gentle, localized procedure to remove the offending nail border. Some patients deal with stubborn, recurrent ingrown nails that keep coming back month after month, we can perform a quick, permanent matrixectomy procedure to stop that specific edge from growing back entirely.

The Benefit: Back on Your Feet

The best part of treating ingrown toenails is the turnaround time. The moment that offending piece of nail is removed, the pressure vanishes. With proper post-procedure care, my patients recover rapidly, returning to their normal footwear and daily activities without that constant, throbbing reminder in their toe.

If you are dealing with a painful, stubborn ingrown nail in the Sacramento Metro area, you do not have to just live with it. Give us a call at Elk Grove Foot and Ankle Clinic, and let us get you back on your feet.
